Hoverboards have been the hottest gift items in this holiday season.
But there is now a new reason that the mini-segway is making the headlines.
Numerous reports have emerged of these self balancing scooters actually catching on fire, and sometimes even exploding.
The first few reports surfaced in Europe and were considered to be just rumors.
But now these incidents have been happening all over the world, particularly in the United States (some with accompanying photos and videos).
With these recent reports, it’s hard to ignore that it is a critical and important issue for hoverboard owners.

Where Are Hoverboards Exploding?
The first few segway board explosions were reported in the UK. But then in this month alone, there have been several reports of hoverboards exploding or catching on fire.
With all these reports, one has to ask, why have there been an increase in such incidents? One of the most significant reasons is the sudden increase in the volume of mini-segways out there.
This past Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale, there were record sales of hoverboards, not just in malls and outlets, but also in online markets. In EBay alone, there was a reported sale rush with a reported 1 hoverboard sold every 12 seconds. This enormous increase in sales would obviously increase the number of mini-segways with consumers, thus affecting the number of incidents happening.
What Causes Mini-Segways to Explode?
Why are these hoverboards exploding? In most of the cases, the fire or combustion starts with the battery of the device. These boards are powered by a lithium ion battery. It is the same type of battery that powers our tablet pads and our smart phones. But unlike these handheld devices, the hoverboards are slammed, dropped, and crashed into objects.
You would think that this would be the underlying cause for the batteries exploding, but that is not the case. In a smaller percentage, it is not the batteries that are the issue, but rather lesser quality chargers that cause the fires. In either case it is lower quality standards that make these boards unsafe.
If you’re looking for a safe board, every board that is recommended here on hubnames.com has gone through testing and can ensure compliance with safety standards.
The hoverboard craze and its consequent demand has caused a lot of lesser quality boards to be rushed through production and put on the market for a portion of the price of higher quality and much safer brands. Even with lesser quality, consumers are still more inclined to buy these boards because they are significantly less expensive than other brands.
Which Hoverboards Are Safe? Is it Dangerous to Buy One Now?
The media coverage has not specifically named the brands that have caused the fires, but it is relatively known which brands have lower quality standards. Amazon has pulled all hoverboard brands that have not met the safety standards for consumers, and has slowly added some back in as they prove they’ve met the rigorous safety requirements.
All Amazon hoverboards recommended below or in our Hoverboard Buyer’s Guide are safe to purchase, without the low quality battery or charger issues that have been plaguing the media.
