Why do you need a Gun Safe?
Whether you have bought your gun to defend yourself or for sport, proper storing of guns is a must for all gun owners. Being a responsible gun owner starts even before purchasing your gun. Careful planning is important before even contemplating what kind of gun you want.
Even though your gun is your responsibility, other people may still have access to it once unattended. Usually, when you purchase your gun, it would come with its own protective case. A protective case is only protects the gun from outside factors like corrosion, water, and dust. It’s also used for storage convenience. However, it does not guarantee complete safety as the usual handgun protective cases do not have the means to secure the gun for the exclusive use of the owner.
If you have purchased a gun for the safety of your family, you probably would think that it would be best if you store the gun in your nightstand or on a nearby drawer. It somehow makes sense since a gun stored in the nightstand makes it very accessible, and you can get to it whenever an intrusion is in progress. However, placing your gun in an unsecured location like a nightstand is a potential disaster – since the nightstand is one of the first things that intruders or burglars look for in a home invasion. Your ticket to safety may be the one to seal your doom. It’s situations like these that make Gun Safes very important.
Owning a gun does not guarantee your safety. If other people can get to your gun, then the whole idea of protecting yourself and your family becomes moot. Making sure that you’re the only one who can access your gun AND that you can access your gun whenever you need to is crucial. Guns may be misused by other people – not just the intruders, but also the people in your household. The misuse of a gun can be catastrophic. That’s why people who own guns need gun safes – to make sure that access to the gun is limited.
There are many types of gun safes – some are just basic locking cabinets, some have more advanced authentication features, and some who have extensive protection measures against theft and external factors like fire and water. Picking out a gun safe is dependent on what you need the gun safe for. If your primary concern is to limit access, then a locking cabinet may suffice. If you have additional concerns over the security of the gun, then a two-factor authenticated safe or a biometric safe may be more suitable to your needs. If your concern is to protect your gun from outside factors and from theft, then you can go for a heavy safe with thick, reinforced material.
Make sure that your gun is secure and that you can get to it whenever you need to. Responsible gun ownership starts at home. Owning a gun brings a sense of added security, but it also brings a ton of responsibility.
Gun safe: Mechanical vs Digital Locks
Gun safes’ security is basically delivered by its thick metal sheets and lock. Without one or the other, storing your items inside would be pointless. Some traditional gun safes still have the mechanical combination lock, which most users say is more reliable than its digital counterpart. In this article, we would compare the pros and cons of a mechanical lock and a digital lock.
Mechanical Lock
Mechanical locks are very sturdy, and can stand the test of time. A well-built mechanical lock rarely has issues with its locking mechanism or the safe, in general. Of course, mechanical locks also have their downsides. We’ve seen in movies that mechanical locks can be cracked with someone with an expertise in cracking safes. While this is entirely possible, it’s easier done on the movies than in real life. Cracking a safe without the use of a drill may require hours at a time. Combination dial locks may prove to be difficult, especially when the code disappears with someone who passed away, or the combination lock is simply forgotten. If this happens, one has to enlist the help of a professional locksmith that specializes in cracking combination codes to make use of the safe once more. The difficulty to crack the codes is exactly why people still stick to mechanical lock gun safes. It’s safe, secure, and can probably outlast your lifetime. However, certain markings on a mechanical lock make it very easy for someone to spy on your combination code. Some models now have measures to prevent onlookers to see the combination dial, and the numbers would only be visible at a certain angle.
Electronic/Digital Locks
Electronic and Digital locks are convenient alternatives to mechanical locks. Instead of turning the dial, digital locks only require a key code. This method of entering a code is very convenient for those who have trouble using mechanical dials. This is also popular for those who have problems with their eyesight and cannot accurately enter a combination in a mechanical dial. It is also easy to change the combination code in a digital lock as compared to its mechanical counterpart. However, there are certain problems with electronic and digital locks. When electronic locks are used over time, some cheap models have their keypads worn out, revealing which numbers was commonly pressed, thus giving a clue to its combination code. This is one of the most common problems when using Digital locks. One other problem with digital locks is its reliability. Electronics are bound to succumb to wear and tear eventually, and when they do get worn out, chances are, you’ll need a professional locksmith to open your safe, and your electronic safe would require another locking mechanism installed. Digital locks may not be as reliable as mechanical dial locks, but some individuals prefer the quick access convenience of a digital lock over the durability of a mechanical dial lock. Accessibility is important for gun safes, especially when the need to defend yourself arises – every second will count, and very few would ever have the nerve to accurately spin the dial for the correct combination code.

A convenient and quickly accessible gun safe is indispensable for a responsible gun owner. Not only does this concern legal protection, but also the safety of the entire family in many ways. However, it is never worth the trouble if the safe is not reliable and offers poor storage options. And often the budget becomes the hurdle in materializing the right investment. Design and Appearance

The exterior strategically places the four touch pad digits just to the top of the safe over the latch opening, allowing for easier access. The dimensions of the safe are 15 x 10.5 x 8.2 inches with a weight of 9.7 pounds.

The features that make this Gun Safe a reliable firearms storage option are its strong construction and quick access. The latch door operation works instantly with the back up key as well as with the No-Eyes learn keys, which is a more sophisticated locking system than it seems. If perfect is an exaggeration, then BARSKA Mini Biometric Safe is undoubtedly an excellent solution for personal safety and security, balanced by remarkable ease of access. It’s a surprise that this handy safe is not more popular than it already is.
Gun Safe Buying Guide
Getting a gun safe may be quite troublesome if you don’t know what to look for. Some gun safes are just downright outrageous for some gun users, but the outrageous features are usually what’s necessary to store your guns securely. Here are some pointers for you to think about when you buy your next gun safe:
Check the safe’s standards against tampering
– Contrary to popular belief, most safes can be cracked or opened by brute force. Drilling is one of the most common ways to open a safe. Usually, a household safe – whether it’s a gun or valuables safe, are not immune to drilling. Low-grade safes can easily be cracked by a simple power tool, and thus, does not offer ample protection to store something as delicate as a gun. Some safes have relockers to make it much more difficult to crack a safe. Safes with relockers cannot be cracked without hours and hours of drilling. Choose the gun safe with the appropriate safety features against burglaries. Ask your sales person about the number of relockers on the gun safe. More relockers mean that it would take much, much longer for someone to break into your safe.
Check the safe’s safety specs
– A safe’s security is not measured by its overall size and weight. When choosing a safe, it’s important to investigate the thickness of the walls and its propensity for being breached. Ask how thick EACH wall is. Some shady sales people only tell you the thickest part of the safe. Always get into the specifics of any safe that you buy, as some safes have a reputation for being easily broken into.
Purchase a safe that is bigger than what you need
– Choosing a safe that only houses all of the guns that you currently own may be a bad idea. Your collection may grow to such size that buying a gun safe that would just fit all of what you currently own may not be good enough. Buy a gun safe that is large enough to store your other valuables as well. Think of a gun safe as an investment. Gun safes rarely deteriorate over time. Spend your money with the features and protection that you need. The money that you spend on a gun safe is not ill-spent as gun safes are fairly easy to resell because its quality doesn’t change over time.
Get Fire and Water resistance for your safe
– When you purchase a gun safe, you’d be more than likely to use your safe for other valuables as well. Protect your guns and other valuables by getting a safe that is fire and water resistant. Studies show that your valuables, like your guns, are more than likely to be destroyed by fire rather than being stolen.
When choosing a safe, it’s important to do your research. It’s for your security, after all. Look at different brands to choose the right combination of security and value for you and your family. Gun ownership is a responsibility that rarely comes cheap. Think of your gun safe as a necessary investment that puts worries about your guns to rest.
Gun safe Safety tips
While gun safes are purchased to make itsafe for you and your family, there are some safety precautions that you need to know when storing guns inside your safe. Mishandling the contents of a safe means a potential for disaster and ultimately defeats the purpose of having a safe in the first place. Here are some reminders for keeping your gun safe secure.
Do not leave all of your weapons loaded in a safe – If you have a gun collection, leave just one weapon loaded in your safe and keep ammunition stored separately. The loaded weapon is your means to defend yourself in the event of a home invasion or burglary. Leaving all of your weapons loaded in a safe means that you’re putting yourself in harms way when there are more loaded weapons in your house in the event of a burglary. Remember which weapon you kept loaded and which part you kept your weapon. Practice opening your safe quickly and be prepared if in case you would need to use your loaded gun. If you want, keep the gun that you’re most familiar to loaded so you can respond quickly in an emergency situation.
Do not leave ammunitions loose in the safe – For added security, create a different lock for your ammunition. If all but one of your guns are unloaded, burglars would spend more time looking for a loaded gun or looking for your ammunition to use it against you. Keeping ammunition on a different locker is also like separating the lock from the key. One can’t use one without the other.
Do not leave powder inside the safe – Highly combustible material inside an airtight chamber is a potential for disaster. Powder ignited inside a gun safe has the potential markings of a bomb. Static charges inside a safe may ignite the powder creating a rapid expansion of gases inside your safe, turning your safe into a giant bomb. Also, in the event of a fire, superheated containers may explode due to powders being ignited inside. Powder is not harmful on its own. Store your powder in a separate, but secure container that’s free from sunlight, moisture and static electrical charges.
Remove the wooden pallet – Safes are pretty challenging to move, that’s why wooden pallets are installed underneath to assist in the transport. However, do not forget to remove the wooden pallet underneath because that only makes it easier for others to MOVE the entire safe. Do not rely on just the sheer weight and thickness of your safe. Remember, most safes can be cracked or drilled open. Some may take longer time to crack or drill, but eventually it would be broken. Make sure that your gun safe is bolted down and secured.
The usual gun safety techniques must also be applied even when storing your guns. Your gun ownership responsibility does not end when you store your guns in your safe. The safety of the people around you is not just the responsibility of a gun owner. It’s everybody’s responsibility as a citizen.
