Garden is not just a place where you can refresh yourself after a tiring day job or energize yourself before going to the work the next day, but it also enhances beauty of your home. A beautiful garden shows more about your personality, how you live and that you can care about other things too.
A garden needs periodic maintenance and care. And for that fact it needs care, maintenance; like flowers, edges, new decks etc. Making edges of a garden bed is just a part of it. And there are far many benefits of edges; for instance,
- A garden bed edge would create a separation between your lawn and the flower bed. This would make it easier for people to know where not to put their steps.
- Also, it protects your flower bed from those unintentional step on and other little accidents. A fencing would add an extra wall of protection if animals or kids are generally present in your lawn.
- It would also make your garden noticeable, especially for small gardens in the house which solicit for your guests’ attention.
- And unquestionably, it would glorify your home. The beauty and smell of flowers makes everyone happy and calm.
There are many ways in which you can construct the edges to augment the elegance of your garden. Here we will discuss a few popular ones:
1. Wooden edging
Wooden edges add a natural look and texture to the boundaries of flower bed. The wood mixes with the colourful flowers, thus enhancing the beauty of the flower bed. You can use logs of redwood or carved and polished rectangular slabs, choice is up to you to explore what suits your needs best.
2. Stone boundary
Stones and pebbles can be used in heaps as a wedge shaped boundary, giving a classy vintage kind of look to your garden. It is also favorable sometimes over wooden ones as neither does it corrode with time, nor does it has a risk of getting burned.
3. Concrete boundary
A concrete boundary is solid, strong and permanent. It defines a distinct area in your garden and separates it from the lawn. It doesn’t need much care for years or even decades once established, though might require regular paint jobs.
4. Bricked boundary
If you’re not much a fan of concrete boundaries and want to give a raw and bare look then you could go with plain bricks and paint them with a bright red or orange paint or any other color that would come out good with the greenery and flowers.
5. Polymer boundary
There are also many polyethylene and Bakelite covering parts available; these are ready made polymer structures that you can use to create boundaries by just joining them together like legos. They are as strong as concrete but more durable and the best part is that they are not much costly.
6. Fashion-rock boundary
You could merge any of the above mentioned and add some rocky blend to it by placing non carved big stone in between here and there to give a more natural look.
7. Simple bush boundary
It is generally used for gardens with big trees, but if your flower plants are big enough then you could also use a hedging or shrubbery bush. You will periodically need to trim the leaves but it is a decent flexible boundary.
Apart from the materials to make the boundary, the shape of those boundaries must also be considered, as it would not look good if you just make a closed polygon with no definite shape or a line of symmetry within it. There are many typical shapes you could choose from like:
- Closed cells:
These are basically dividers separating different variety of plants and still keeping the whole garden together.
- Rectangular
This is just an outer rectangular covering to provide a decent look to your garden
- Oval
As the name suggests, the boundary is oval shaped and is generally made of stones or bushes.
- Triangular
These are good for small gardens, and add cuteness to them. You could also divide a rectangular garden into two triangles
- Cris-cross
This boundary is for the long flower beds which cover alongside the front fencing or wall. Nothing brings out the flair of long flower beds as it does.
