One of your most important clients is coming to town and would like to meet with you at your office. The only problem is that you run your business from home. Instead of allowing the carefully crafted image of a corporate operation crumble, you can arrange for a virtual office rental and have a place to meet. In order to give the space more of a permanent feel, there are a few things you can do.
Add a Plant or Two
A temporary office space will come with all the basics but none of the things that give the place any personalization. You can’t make any permanent changes since you are only using the office for a short time. One way to add a touch of permanence to the work area is to bring in a plant or two.
Consider you can rent plants from many florists and other types of shops. Arrange to rent something that will not require much attention but will dress up your desk a little. It wouldn’t hurt to have some type of potted tree to grace one corner of the office. The presence of the live plants does make it seem as if you’ve been there for some time and plan on being around for the foreseeable future.
Bring Along Some Wall Art
There are likely already picture hooks in the temporary office so why not put them to good use? Take along a few of your favorite paintings or business related posters and create a grouping on the wall behind the desk. Another piece of wall art to fill in the space next to your potted tree will help too.
A Desk Set Helps Too
You don’t have to go overboard with loading up the desk with all sorts of items, but a basic desk set will help. That means a blotter that also doubles as a calendar, something to hold a few pens and pencils, and perhaps a business card holder that bears a brass nameplate with your name and title on it. Add your tablet or laptop to the mix and you will have what looks like a permanent work area.
Don’t Forget the Floor
While you could allow the carpeting to be enough, why not dress things up a bit with an area rug? Float the rug in the space in front of the desk and anchor the rug with two comfortable chairs. This helps to add another dash of color to what is typically a neutral environment and provides the impression that you’ve been at that location for some time.
Remember that the process of hot desking means someone else will be waiting to use the space once you are done with it. Make sure you can gather all of your personal items quickly once your meeting is over and the client is on the way home. That will allow the next person to also add a personal touch for whatever meeting they plan on holding tomorrow or the next day.
